Spooky Trail!

Plans are under way for the 3rd annual Lakemont Spooky Trail. This event has been a great way for our members to get together after the pool has closed, to raise some money for the pool, and to show the surrounding community how much fun we have at Lakemont. In order to continue for this event to be successful, we need volunteers. Don’t have a lot of spare time? That’s OK. We need volunteers for planning and preparation, or just the evening of the event. Any amount of time would be appreciated. The event will be held on Saturday, October 29th and will include a good old fashioned bake sale too. For more information or questions, please see Ann House this Saturday during the member appreciation party or e-mail her at jnahouse@nc.rr.com

Trivia: Have you noticed that beautiful pair of raptors soaring above our pool this summer? Some find their screeching a bit unnerving, but it is hard to deny these hawks are incredible. Well, being a bit of a geek/nerd, I could not resist trying to identify them. It appears that our guests might just be a pair of Cooper’s Hawks and the screeching is them calling out to each other about food delivery. They also make other sounds you might find familiar, and a great site to listen can be found at: Cornell’s Ornithology Page. Also interesting, they eat other birds (i.e. mourning doves) and the male, who is much smaller, builds the nests and does much of the “domestic” work.

Congratulations to the Torpedoes! We finished the season with a big win over Oak Park! Lakemont: 309/ Oak Park: 194 (look for the weekly awards in next week’s Edge). A big THANK YOU to our coaches and the volunteers for all the hard work they put in to make the meets happen. Hope to see all the swimmers and their families at the Swim Team Banquet on July 28 at 6pm.
- Lakemont at Southall: A big thank you to all of the swimmers and parents for coming out during the massive heat wave on Tuesday. You know it’s hot when the kids (who are in bathing suits and in the water) are complaining it’s hot! The swimmers swam great and continued to show improvements in both their stroke technique and times.
- Last week’s Awards:
- Speeding Ticket – Lia Naranjo receives the Speeding Ticket for this week. Lia, who is 6 years old, swam backstroke in the 7-8 medley relay and was the first swimmer to the wall.
- Torpedo Award – Emma Poyer was put in the the 7-8 freestyle relay at the last minute (literally!) due to a mistake made by the coaches in the meet line. She swam a great race and didn’t protest while being whisked away at the last minute to swim for the team.
- Swimmer of the Week – Spencer Pippin has a great work ethic and attitude. He is encouraging to his teammates and is willing to do whatever is asked of him.
- Swim Team Banquet! Just a reminder that the swim team banquet will be on Thursday, July 28 at the pool at 6 pm. If you can help decorate the banquet, please contact Rita Jones (ritajones1@juno.com).
