As the pool season winds down and the sun sets earlier, the swim time after 8 pm on Friday and Saturday evenings will get shorter. We are not permitted for night swimming and the lifeguards will blow the whistle when it gets dark. Stay and visit until 9, but please support the guards in keeping our kids safe.

The first season of the Lakemont community garden has been quite a success. Thanks to all who have faithfully watered, weeded, harvested, and shared the bounty. It’s about time to start thinking about a fall garden. If you want to get in on the fun, contact Fred Woodward fmwoodward@earthlink.net or Jenny Fanjoy tfanjoy@nc.rr.com.

Trivia: Have you noticed that beautiful pair of raptors soaring above our pool this summer? Some find their screeching a bit unnerving, but it is hard to deny these hawks are incredible. Well, being a bit of a geek/nerd, I could not resist trying to identify them. It appears that our guests might just be a pair of Cooper’s Hawks and the screeching is them calling out to each other about food delivery. They also make other sounds you might find familiar, and a great site to listen can be found at: Cornell’s Ornithology Page. Also interesting, they eat other birds (i.e. mourning doves) and the male, who is much smaller, builds the nests and does much of the “domestic” work.
